A Celebration of Fatherhood
I haven't seen these adorable kids since our adventure at Sutro Baths last year. Marlowe has changed the most. I didn't see the shy, thumb-sucking baby girl, but instead, she was playful, still very much aware of the camera, and I even saw the pouty face once or twice ;). Her brother Luke is as sweet and adventurous as always. But this session was about capturing the special relationship they have with their dad, Dennis.
I set out simply to document the good I see. Yes, recognizing the good in our dads shouldn't be limited to just Father's Day, but I'm grateful for the occasion that gave us the opportunity to ponder and celebrate.
As you look through the pictures, you'll see the image where Dennis holds Marlowe's arm when the waves snuck up on them. To me, that is a perfect reflection of fatherhood: always there, ready to rescue.
When you are little, you think your parents are invincible, and that's what that picture communicates, and I have a feeling that Marlowe and Luke think the same about their dad.
When I planned the session with Dennis, I really didn't know what kind of moments I was going to capture. But then I remembered that my job was only to provide a context for them so they can create their own memories, and the special connections you see are a reflection of what's already there: Luke and Marlowe's dependence on Dennis, their admiration for him, his care and love for them.
What a privilege it is to witness and document such a remarkable gift as fatherhood. Thank you again, Dennis, Luke, and Marlowe for giving me the opportunity.
